A deeply restorative postpartum meal for healing, energy, and digestion
In the first few weeks after birth, the body isn’t asking for salads or complicated recipes. It’s asking for warmth, softness, and food that feels easy to digest.
After pregnancy and birth, digestion slows, sleep disappears, and energy is constantly being redirected toward healing and feeding a baby. Cold or heavy meals can feel overwhelming. But warm, slow-cooked foods calm the nervous system, hydrate the body, and help rebuild strength.
Congee — a slow-simmered rice porridge — is one of my favorite meals to prepare for families. It’s simple, deeply nourishing, and endlessly reheatable. Exactly what exhausted parents need.
This version uses shredded rotisserie chicken to keep things practical and accessible, because postpartum food should feel supportive, not like another task on your list.
Why congee is ideal for postpartum recovery
- Easier to digest
- Extra hydrating
- Soothing to the gut
- Quick to absorb nutritionally
Think of it as halfway between food and medicine — comfort that truly restores you.
Ingredient spotlight: how each one supports healing
White jasmine rice — gentle carbohydrates that provide steady energy without taxing digestion.
Shredded rotisserie chicken — high-quality protein for tissue repair and stable blood sugar, with zero prep required.
Bone broth or stock — mineral-rich hydration that replenishes electrolytes and supports recovery.
Sweet potatoes — grounding, naturally sweet, and packed with fiber and beta carotene for sustained energy.
Ginger and garlic — warming and anti-inflammatory, traditionally used to support circulation and immunity.
Tamari or coconut aminos and lemon — savory depth plus brightness to stimulate appetite and support mineral absorption.

Christina’s Tip
Make a double batch and portion into jars. It reheats in minutes and feels like a hug at 2 a.m. — exactly the kind of no-effort nourishment new parents need.
Because postpartum food shouldn’t require energy. It should give energy.
